Councilman James Sanders wants spot in Barack Obama administration

City councilman James Sanders bucked most New York Democrats when he picked Barack Obama - and now he's hoping Obama picks him.

In a recent unguarded moment outside a Far Rockaway housing project, Sanders told the Daily News he would like to follow Obama to Washington if he captures the White House.

"I want to finish my term here [but] if the nation called, I certainly would answer," said Sanders, a former Marine with a maverick reputation.

For nearly a year - when Sen. Hillary Clinton's party nomination seemed like a lock - New York Democrats assumed many of them would be headed for big jobs in a Clinton administration.

Sanders is one of the few New York Democrats who now look like they picked the right horse. Harlem State Sen. Bill Perkins was the first New York official to endorse Obama. He was followed by others, but nowhere near the numbers that lined up behind Clinton.

Sanders has crisscrossed the nation campaigning for Obama, including in South Carolina and New Hampshire. He plans to visit Michigan and Florida in the coming months, he said. "Perhaps my talents, as meager as they are, may be of use in D.C.," said Sanders.

If Sanders left office, it would set up a peculiar special election for his Council seat. Nearly a dozen contenders are interested, including his wife, Andrea Stevenson-Sanders, and ex-wife, Jamilah Sanders, party insiders said.

Sanders married Stevenson-Sanders, his former chief of staff, in 2005. The councilman was fined $1,000 by the city Conflicts of Interest Board for keeping her on the payroll for eight months after their wedding, violating anti-nepotism rules.

Sanders is the only term-limited member of the Queens delegation not running for another elective office in 2009. He has recently ramped up his media appearances and is regularly seen with an Obama '08 pin on his lapel.

When asked what kind of appointment job he'd like, Sanders was direct. "I would love to do something in economic development," he said. "[But] it's premature to count our chickens before they hatch."

An Obama spokeswoman could not give specifics about Sanders' involvement and noted he is not an official surrogate.

Sanders' early support for Obama may have been the right move for a politician who is out of step with local leadership, political strategists said.

"When you get on the train early, you always get a good seat," said Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf. "Presidential candidates remember people who were there for them early and often."

Biography

Carl E. Heastie, Assemblyman for the 83rd A.D. in the Bronx, is one of the youngest African-American New York State legislators. Assemblyman Heastie, who was elected in 2000, has been called one of the most active Assembly members by his colleagues.
He has secured funds for his district in the areas of housing, education, after school programming, health and human services, job readiness and computer training. Carl E. Heastie is the Co-Chairman of the Legislative Taskforce on Demographic Research and Reapportionment and Chairman of the Labor Sub-Committee on Emerging Workforce.

Since taking office, Assemblyman Heastie has become one of the lead negotiators for the construction of new schools in his district. To add to his list of accomplishments, Assemblyman Heastie was the author of a law that prohibited the sale of Nico-water to children under 18 years old. Nico-water is Nicotine laced water. This product was designed to be a supplement to help people quit smoking but was not covered under existing law or regulations to sufficiently protect young children.

Prior to taking office, Assemblyman Heastie was employed as a budget analyst in the New York City comptroller’s office where he researched, prepared and authored reports on the City’s spending patterns. This experience in budget analysis is one of the strongest skills Assemblyman Heastie brings to the New York State Legislature.

Assemblyman Heastie is second to none when it comes to his ability to evaluate numbers. This skill was learned at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
Assemblyman Heastie earned his MBA in Finance from the Bernard M. Baruch College (CUNY) in May of 2007. Even as a child growing up in the New York City public school system, he has always had a love for math.

Assemblyman Heastie continues his community involvement as a member of the Williamsbridge Branch NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women. His involvement is not just limited to memberships, though. On any given weekend, you will find him making his rounds to support block parties and street fairs, giving monetary donations and helping out wherever he can.
Assemblyman Heastie will continue to push his agenda; addressing education, economic development and furthering the interests of the elderly.
